Basically, we would like to build a platform that is exclusively dedicated to urban actors. After countless encounters with all kinds of urban actors – big and small, powerful and powerless, governmental or non-governmental, public or private, for profit or non-profit, local or international, established or beginners, rich and poor – we are convinced that such a platform has the potential to change the way our cities are “produced”.

In the following, we would like to give you an overview of our goals and maxims which guide and inspire our actions. While the goals indicate what the platform should achieve, that is, how it should influence the city, the maxims indicate how the platform itself should be designed and how it should function. 

Wir moechten eine  Plattform initiieren | bauen | programmieren, die ausschliesslich staedtische Akteure adressiert. Nach zahlreichen Begegnungen mit unterschiedlichen “urban actors” – gross und klein, maechtig und ohnmaechtig, staatlich und NGO, oeffentlich und privat, profit- und gemeinwohlorientiert, lokal und global, etabliert und in den Startloechern, arm und  reich – sind wir  ueberzeugt, dass eine solche Plattform das Potenzial hat, die Stadt und vor allem die “Produktion” von Stadt zu veraendern und zu demokratisieren.

Nachfolgend moechten wir Ihnen ueberblicksartig die Ziele und Prinzipien vorstellen, die unser Handeln leiten. Waehrend die Ziele darstellen, was die Plattform erreichen soll, veranschaulichen die Maximen, wie die Plattform selbst aufgebaut sein und funktionieren soll.

The platform should provide a stage for urban actors

DIE PLATTFORM BIETET STÄDTISCHEN AKTEUREN EINE BÜHNE

On this stage, urban actors can show who they are, what they are doing, with whom they are connected and how they understand their role in the city. As the platform gathers a very diverse range of actors, it becomes, step by step, a source of inspiration and insight – not only for established actors but also for the broader public. Moreover, this stage also turns into a space of interaction.

Wir alle kennen den Bürgermeister, die Stadtreinigung, einige Bürgerinitiativen und die großen Planungsbüros. Aber es gibt noch unzählige weitaus weniger bekannte Akteure in der Stadt. Wer sind sie? Wie verstehen sie ihre Rolle? Was sind ihre Ziele und Projekte? Wer kennt wen? Wer kann was? Die Plattform versammelt all jene Bürger(innen) und Organisationen, die unsere Stadt gestalten oder künftig mitgestalten wollen. Sie avanciert nicht nur Schritt für Schritt zu einer Quelle für Information und Inspiration, sondern auch zu einem Raum für Zusammenarbeit und gemein-sames Handeln.

The platform should encourage newcomers

Die Plattform fordert und sie fördert Initiative

Citizens and institutions who are not yet participating in urban affairs, or who do not yet understand themselves as urban actors are invited, as it were, to step on stage. The platform instigates interest in urban affairs and provokes citizens and institutions to show initiative and become engaged in the business of their city. The platform does not only portray actors but also informs users about upcoming actions and events.

Viele Bürger(innen), Firmen und andere Organisationen leben und arbeiten zwar in der Stadt und nutzen sie mehr oder weniger intensiv – doch zumeist verstehen sie sich nicht als städtische Akteure, als Gestalter und als Verantwortliche. Die Plattform
ermutigt sie, die Initiative zu ergreifen und städtische Entwicklungen aktiv zu beeinflussen. Sie weckt Interesse für öffentliche Angelegenheiten aus Nachbarschaft, Bezirk und Stadtgebiet und regt zur Diskussion an.

The platform should illustrate networks

DIE PLATTFORM ILLUSTRIERT BESTEHENDE NETZWERKE

The platform directs attention not only to individual urban actors, but also to existing and potential relations between them. Once they are visible, certain connections might be interpreted in various ways. It is not our intention to judge networks. Rather, we would like to make them transparent and follow their development. The network analysis is interesting not only for urban actors, but also for citizens and researchers.

Momentan ist es schwierig, sich einen Überblick über verschiedene städtische Akteure zu verschaffen, da die Informationen im Internet verstreut sind und sich ihre Fülle, Richtigkeit und Zusammenstellung von Akteur zu Akteur stark unterscheidet. Aber wer ein wenig sucht wird fündig. Es ist hingegen oft unmöglich herauszufinden, wer wen kennt und wer mit wem wo und wie zusammenarbeitet. Die Plattform nimmt bestehende Netzwerke städtischer Akteure unter die Lupe, veranschaulicht diese und trägt dadurch zu mehr Transparenz bei. Dies ist nicht nur für die Akteure selbst, sondern auch für Bürger(innen), Journalisten und Researcher interessant.

The platform should establish unexpected connections

Perhaps even more important than existing networks are missing links! The platform connects actors who, otherwise, would not notice or communicate with each other. We witnessed on many occasions that moments of surprise, unforeseen confrontations at eye level and unthought of collaborations – no matter how unorthodox they may seem at first glance – often turn out to be very fruitful.

Häufig sind fehlende Verbindungen min-destens genauso wirkmächtig wie bestehende Netzwerke. Die Plattform trägt dazu bei, Akteure miteinander zu verknüpfen und wortwörtlich an einen Tisch zu bringen, die ansonsten nichts voneinander wüssten oder nicht miteinander kommunizieren würden. Wir haben häufig erlebt, dass aus Überraschungsmomenten und unerwarteten Begegnungen heraus spannende und wirkungsvolle Projekte erwachsen können.

The platform should break through routine settings

DIE PLATTFORM BRICHT MIT ROUTINEN UND ROLLENBILDERN

Certain types of actors almost always meet in the same setting: citizen initiatives and developers meet as oppositions, planning departments and architectural offices meet as employers and service providers, citizens and politicians meet as taxpayers and decision-makers. The platform leaves these standard settings behind and allows different urban actors to meet as urban actors outside their usual roles and contexts.

Einige städtische Akteure begegnen einander immer im gleichen Kontext: Bürgerinitiativen und Bauunternehmer sind für gewöhnlich in Opposition; Stadtplaner und Architekturbüros sind normalerweise Auftraggeber und Dienstleister; Bürger(innen) und Politiker treffen sich meist als Wähler bzw. Steuerzahler und Entscheidungsträger bzw. Sündenbock. Die Plattform durchbricht diese Konstellationen und ermöglicht es verschiedensten städtischen Akteuren eigene Vorurteile abzubauen und zumindest für den Moment aus vorgegebenen und lang eingeübten Rollen zu fallen, um sich auf Augenhöhe zu begegnen.

DIE PLATTFORM VERDEUTLICHT DIE ENORME KOMPLEXITÄT STÄDTISCHER ANGELEGENHEITEN

In that sense, it is not only a stage but also a defense for urban actors against prejudices which are, most commonly, held by those who judge from the outside. Since those who have never actually tried to change the city themselves are often the first to complain about what is being done, we would like to find ways to illustrate how difficult it often – though not always – is to change anything for the better.

In diesem Sinne ist sie nicht nur eine Bühne, sondern auch eine Verteidigung städtischer Akteure gegen Vorurteile, Unterstellungen und Anschuldigungen. Wer noch nie selbst versucht hat oder Gelegenheit dazu hatte die eigene Stadt zu gestalten, hat keine Vorstellung davon, wie schwierig es in den meisten – jedoch nicht in allen! – Fällen ist, selbst Kleinigkeiten zu verbessern. Die Plattform vermittelt den Bürger(innen) wie komplex die Stadt, in der sie leben, tatsächlich ist.
