The platform should combine analog and virtual elements

DIE PLATTFORM KOMBINIERT ANALOGE UND VIRTUELLE ELEMENTE

Google, facebook, twitter, amazon, wikipedia and countless other online platforms demonstrate the internet’s incredible potential to reach, to inform and to connect people. Nonetheless, no virtual medium could ever replace actual human encounters or match the intensity of real-world-experiences. Since urban actors are concerned with the city, and since the city is physical and analog in nature, we are convinced that the platform we have in mind cannot be a purely virtual space. In order to reach our goals, we would like to combine and benefit from “the best of both worlds”.

Das Internet hat ein unglaubliches Potential Menschen zu informieren, zu erreichen und miteinander zu vernetzen – google, facebook, amazon & Co stellen dies täglich unter Beweis. Doch kein virtuelles Netzwerk kann jemals echte zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen ersetzen. Und Bilder, Videos oder Podcasts sind kein Ersatz für menschliche Erfahrungen in der echten Welt. Wir wollen versuchen, die Plattform sowohl in der virtuellen als auch in der analogen Welt zu etablieren und das Beste aus beiden Welten zusammenzubringen.

The platform is not commercial but it should be self-sustaining

DIE PLATTFORM IST NICHT KOMMERZIELL, DOCH SIE IST SELBSTTRAGEND

 

To portray urban actors, to encourage citizens, to disclose existing and to establish new relations between actors is not a business model. In other words, we are not trying to get rich with this idea. On the contrary, we understand the platform as a common good that should be accessible to everybody. However, we are also convinced that the platform should, at least on the long run, sustain itself, that is, be financed by those who use it.

Unser Projekt hat kein Geschäftsmodell und unser Ziel ist nicht persönliche Bereicherung. Im Gegenteil: wir verstehen die Plattform als ein common good. Gleichzeitig sind wir jedoch überzeugt, dass die Plattform nicht ewig auf Spendengelder und Wohltäter angewiesen sein sollte. Mittel- bis langfristig sollte sie von denjenigen finanziert werden, die sie nutzen und denen sie nützt.

The platform should be independent

DIE PLATTFORM IST UNABHÄNGIG

In order to be a trustworthy source of information and a fruitful meeting ground, the platform must not depend on, be part of or subordinate to any single actor or any particular group of actors. In this and in other respects, the principles of the platform are quite similar to the principles of journalists, researchers or moderators.

Damit die Plattform sich als vertrauens-würdige Informationsquelle und als fruchtbarer Boden für Diskussion und Zusammen-arbeit städtischer Akteure etablieren kann, muss sie unabhängig sein. Sie sollte weder Teil einer bestehenden Organisation, noch abhängig vom Wohlwollen bestimmter städtischer Akteure sein, egal ob öffentlich oder privat.

The platform should be neutral and accessible

Die Plattform ist neutral und offen für alle

The platform is envisioned to be a good medium and as such it must not privilege particular actors or openly defend or attack particular standpoints. Consequently, the platform should be open to all urban actors and all of their standpoints. What is more, it should also address and embrace citizens, initiatives and institutions that are not yet urban actors, but ready to “take the stage”.

Genau wie Unabhängigkeit sind auch Neutralität und Zugänglichkeit wichtige Prinzipien der Plattform. Diese ist ein Medium und sollte daher nicht selbst “Partei ergreifen”. Kein städtischer Akteur – ob Bürgermeister oder Bürgerinitiative, ob Bauunternehmer oder Straßenkünstler -, kein Projekt und kein Standpunkt wird bevorzugt, benachteiligt oder gar ausgeschlossen.

The platform should be curated and administered

Die Plattform wird professionell verwaltet und kuratiert

Despite all openness, neutrality and accessibility towards urban actors, the platform has to be programmed by somebody. Whoever is responsible for the platform has to take decisions – and to decide for something always means to decide against something else, just as to do something always means not to do something else. To curate the platform means to realise its goals and its principles. While this can imply selection and examination, it must never lead to censorship or arbitrary exclusion.

Zu jeder guten Debatte gehört ein Moderator, zu jeder guten Datenbank gehört jemand, der sie pflegt, zu jedem guten Museum gehört ein Kurator und zu jedem guten Theater gehört ein Intendant. Wir sind überzeugt, dass auch die Plattform trotz aller Offenheit und Zugänglichkeit auf festes Personal angewiesen ist, um für ihre Nutzer(innen) tatsächlich nützlich zu sein.

The platform should be scalable

Die Plattform ist skalierbar

The platform should be developed and tested in one city. Further, its standard scale will always be the urban scale and its core functions will always be related to the urban actors of one particular city. Nonetheless, its architecture should allow the implementation in other cities.

Wir wollen die Plattform für städtische Akteure in Berlin aufbauen und testen. Gleichzeitig wollen wir ein Modell entwickeln, das prinzipiell in jeder Stadt funktionieren kann (vorausgesetzt der jeweilige lokale Kontext findet Beachtung), in der es städtische Akteure und engagierte Bürger(innen) gibt. Falls die Idee fruchtet, könnte Berlin wieder einmal seinem Ruf als Innovationshauptstadt gerecht werden.
